Roadrunners return to action this week with Chevron Collegiate

SAN ANTONIO — Following a nearly three-week layoff, UTSA will return to action on Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 24-25, at the Chevron Collegiate, which will be hosted by Houston at the Golf Club of Houston.

The Roadrunners will bring a lineup of Maria Bastarrica, Morgan Ellison, Lauren Rios, Daniela Abonce and Olivia Williams to the 54-hole, stroke-play event.

UTSA will line up against top-ranked Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, No. 33 Iowa State, Maryland, No. 12 Mississippi State, North Texas, No. 42 SMU, No. 16 TCU, No. 17 Texas A&M, Texas State, Texas Tech, Tulsa and the host and 21st-ranked Cougars.

The field will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.

The Roadrunners are coming off a tie for 15th place at the Puerto Rico Classic earlier this month. Ellison led the way with a 46th-place showing after carding a 74-76-72—222, while Bastarrica, Rios — who was playing in her first tournament since 2022-23 — and Williams all ended up as part of a five-way tie for 71st (226).

Abonce paces UTSA with a 74.39 stroke average in 18 rounds this season. The junior from Mexico owns a trio of top-16 finishes headlined by a tie for third at the Badger Invitational where she fired a 1-over 217.

Ellison, a senior from Georgia, is close behind with a 74.78 scoring mark to go with five top-30 showings in six outings.

Williams boasts a 75.22 average and a top finish of fifth at the Diane Thomas Invitational, while Bastarrica totes a 76.72 mark.

UTSA finished in a tie for 10th place at last year’s Chevron Collegiate after posting a 3-under 861 (289-283-289). Abonce tied for 25th with a 212 that featured a 7-under 65 in the second round, good for a share of the second-best round in program history.
