PALM DESERT, Calif. — Kaelen Dulany and Logan Zurn placed in the top 20 to help lead UTSA to a fifth-place finish at the Desert Intercollegiate, which wrapped up Wednesday at Classic Club (par 72/7,305 yards).
Dulany finished in a tie for 11th place at 7-under-par 209, while Zurn turned in the Roadrunners’ best score of the final round with a 3-under 69 to jump into a share of 16th at 4-under 212.
That duo helped guide UTSA to a 10-under 854, one shot ahead of host Wyoming and three in front of a deadlock for seventh between UC Riverside and Utah Tech en route to its second straight fifth-place finish. The Roadrunners logged their top 18-hole total of the season in the opening round with a 7-under 281 and followed with a 286 and a 287 to close out their best 54-hole tally of the campaign and the top team total since an 853 recorded at the 2022 Wyoming Cowboy Classic.
Individually, Dulany recorded the best finish of his sophomore season by splitting 11th with Charlotte’s Seb Cave. He opened the week with a 7-under 65 on Monday to tie for the second-best round ever recorded by a Roadrunner. The Keller, Texas, native then posted an even-par 72 on Tuesday to put him at 7-under 137, matching the fourth-best 36-hole total by a Roadrunner.
Today, Dulany closed with his second consecutive 72 that was highlighted by three birdies. He wrote down a three on his opening hole, the 419-yard fifth and also circled his number on the 560-yard, par-5 14th and the 436-yard, par-4 16th. He finished the event with 15 birdies — third most in the field — while turning in UTSA’s best 54-hole total of the season.
Zurn’s 69 in the final round featured five of his team-high 16 birdies, just one shy of the tournament leader. After bogeying his starting hole, he recorded four birdies during a bogey-free streak of 14 holes, including a two on the 176-yard 17th. He settled for his second bogey of the day on No. 3 before closing with a birdie on the 419-yard, par-4 fifth to equal his low round of the season. His opening round of 72 was followed by a 1-under 71 on Tuesday, as the Grapevine, Texas, native ended up in a six-way tie for 16th, good for his top finish of his debut campaign with the Roadrunners.
David Martinez tied for 32nd at 1-under 215, his best 54-hole score of the year. The true freshman out of Houston Memorial High School opened with rounds of 71 and 70 before posting a 74 that included four birdies, three coming on the back nine.
Competing as an individual, Jack Wehman also grabbed a share of 32nd at 1-under 215. The Austin native started his week with a 2-under 70 and closed with a one-shot improvement over Tuesday’s 73 with an even-par scorecard that showed three birdies.
Walker Franklin tied for 43rd with a 2-over 218. After opening with back-to-back 73s, the senior from Colorado registered a 72 on the strength of 14 pars and a pair of birdies.
Brayden Bare rounded out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 75th (74-75-80—229).
No. 37 Charlotte (-21) captured the team title with a 31-under 833, followed by Colorado Christian — the reigning NCAA Division II national champions — at 27-under 837. Coastal Carolina (-18) earned third followed by California Baptist (-12) in the 15-team field.
Colorado Christian’s Xavier Bighaus claimed the individual crown with a 12-under 204 (65-70-69).
The Roadrunners will return to the course on March 8-10 for The Hayt at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
