Martinez finishes 10th, UTSA fifth at Vaqueros Intercollegiate

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico — David Martinez finished in a tie for 10th place and UTSA placed fifth at the Vaqueros Intercollegiate, which concluded Tuesday at Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club (par 72/6,701 yards).

Martinez registered his first career top-10 finish by turning in a 2-over-par 218 for the 54-hole event. The freshman from Houston opened the week with consecutive rounds of 1-over 73 before closing with an even-par 72 today. He logged four birdies during the final round to finish with nine for the event. After a par on his opening hole, he birdied the 171-yard, par-3 second and then posted back-to-back birdies on Nos. 6-7 to help him to a 1-under 35 on the front side. He added a birdie on the 485-yard, par-5 14th en route to his best round as a Roadrunner and the team’s top individual finish of the season.

The Roadrunners took fifth in the team race, wrapping up the tournament with their best team score of the week, a 5-over 293. UTSA ended up with an 887 — 12 strokes ahead of ULM (899) and only one shot behind ACU (886) — while turning in the top team finish of the season.

Logan Zurn grabbed a share of 23rd with an 8-over 224. The junior out of Grapevine, Texas, opened the tournament with rounds of 73 and 72 before settling for a 79 that featured birdies on the 354-yard, par-4 third, the 144-yard, par-3 sixth and the 485-yard, par-5 14th holes.

A trio of Roadrunners finished as part of a five-way tie for 32nd at 11-over 227.

Kaelen Dulany fired UTSA’s low round of the tournament with a 2-under 70 on Tuesday, which vaulted him 22 places into 32nd. The sophomore from Keller, Texas, logged six birdies during his final round, including four as part of a 4-under 32 on the back nine, and he finished with a dozen birdies for the event.

Brayden Bare also ended up in 32nd after closing the week with a 76 that was highlighted by four birdies. The redshirt sophomore from Waco opened with a 77 on Sunday before bouncing back with a 74 on Monday, and he ended up sharing the team lead with Martinez with 34 pars.

Competing as an individual, Walker Franklin also tied for 32nd. The senior from Colorado started his week with a 77 before recording a 1-under 71 on Monday then settling for a 79 today that included three of his team-high 13 birdies.

Logan Vargas rounded out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 89th, closing the event with a 75 that was headlined by three birdies.

No. 16 SMU captured the team title with an 864, followed by UTEP (879) and North Texas (884) in the top three of the 15-team field.

The Roadrunners will be back in action on Feb. 24-26 at the Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, California.
