SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men’s tennis team (5-7) earned its sixth consecutive victory over Incarnate Word (6-4) on Friday afternoon at the Mabry Tennis Center, topping the Cardinals with a 6-1 result in the first series meeting under the guidance of first-year head coach Sasha Gozun.
It was a rapid move for the Roadrunners toward the opening point, as UTSA’s Oskar Grzegorzewski and Ben Chetewy Ungar rolled past Marcel Miralles and Rafael Candelas with a 6-0 result on court two. Danijal Muminovic and Luke Cantu teamed up on three for a 6-2 victory over Marco Rodriguez and Alexandre Chauvel to clinch the point. Finishing out the first court, 63rd-ranked Tiago Torres and Miguel Alonso bested Emilio Vila and Alejandro Hernandez with a 7-6 (4).
Into singles play, Enzo Vargas topped Candelas with a quick two-set victory on court four, 6-3, 6-0. However, the Cardinals trimmed the deficit to 2-1 with a court three win.
Jakub Wlodarczyk battled through a three-set victory over Mateo Galvez on court five, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, while Cantu rallied past Chauvel with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win on six. Going long, Muminovic came back from an early loss to defeat Hernandez in a 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 win. The newly 100th-ranked ITA singles player, Torres closed out Vila, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-5.
