Roadrunners win 12th straight game 12-2

SAN ANTONIO— UTSA grabbed its 12th straight victory to tie the program record in a 12-2 victory over Texas Southern on Friday, Mar. 7 at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas. 

THE BASICS:

Starting pitcher Zach Royse started dealing early in the game, sitting down the first three batters he saw. The Roadrunners threatened in the bottom of the first by getting two runners into scoring position but were unable to score.

Texas Southern took the lead in the second on a double steal with a man on third. The lead did not last long as the Roadrunners put up five runs in the second. Nathan Hodge led the inning off with a single, Norris McClure was then hit by the pitch to advance N. Hodge to second. Garrett Gruell got his first hit with the Roadrunners as he singled to right field, scoring N. Hodge.

With McClure and Gruell on the base paths, Mason Lytle blasted his second home run of the year to left field, putting the Roadrunners up 4-1. Andrew Detlefsen followed the home run with a single, he then advanced to second on a steal. Cade Sadler managed to reach on a fielding error that scored Detlefsen for the Roadrunners' fifth run of the game.

In the third, N. Hodge led the inning off once again by reaching on a fielding error. A single by Andrew Stucky advanced N. Hodge to third. McClure was then able to reach on a fielder’s choice that scored N. Hodge.

Gruell got ahold of his second hit of the day doubling to right field. Lytle was able to pick up his fourth RBI of the game on a single scoring McClure who was standing on third. Detlefsen was hit by the pitch which advanced Lytle to second. Ty Hodge hit a hard ground ball deep in the 5-6 hole allowing Gruell to score. UTSA scored its fourth run of the inning and ninth of the game on a wild pitch.

Both teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth inning. In the sixth, Diego Diaz was hit by the pitch to start the inning. Gruell grabbed his third hit of the game and second RBI as he singled to left field, scoring Diaz. The Roadrunners entered the top of the seventh up 10-1.

Texas Southern added a run, unearned, on an RBI single in the seventh with Christian Okerholm on the mound.

To start the seventh inning, Detlefsen homered, his fifth of the season, to right center. Just three pitches after Detlefsen homered, T. Hodge did the same this time to left center to end the game in seven innings on a run rule.
