SAN ANTONIO – Senior Crislyne Moreno launched a home run and provided an extra-innings walk-off double to secure a 4-3 victory for the UTSA softball team over Tulsa in an American Athletic Conference series opener on Friday at Roadrunner Field.
The Roadrunners (20-29, 5-17 The American) topped the Golden Hurricane (19-28, 7-15 The American) as Moreno stepped up and delivered a double into the gap that scored freshman Sabrina Wick and cemented the win in the eighth inning.
Newcomer Ava Eldridge (7-8) tossed all eight innings for the win, while Alexa Hopkins (2-7) was dealt the loss. Moreno finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with six total bases, while Wick joined her in logging two RBIs.
A solo home run for Moreno opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first, and from there, the bats went quiet until the fifth when a Wick double with two outs knocked in seniors Camryn Robillard and Lindsey Davis for a 3-0 advantage.
Down to their last out in the bottom of the first, Tulsa found a way to extend the contest, scoring a trio of runs to even the score and send the game into extra innings. Eldridge kept the Golden Hurricane off the scoreboard until Wick walked, and Moreno doubled in the bottom of the eighth, cementing the 4-3 victory.
The two squads will meet twice more, with a noon matchup on Saturday, ahead of Senior Day, Sunday at 11 a.m.
